It’s a bit rambly and there are some parts I definitely disagree with, but:

If 100% of the game’s human beings (or human-replicas) do not deviate drastically from the idealized form (go look at any Greek sculpture), something is wrong.
If you can count the number of black people in a single game on one hand, something is wrong.
If all the breasts in a game look roughly the same way, something is very wrong.

Wow. Decided to give The Goulet Pen Company a shot on Thursday, and my order came in today.

Look at this delicious spread! Free ink swatches, couple promo slips…plus a hand-written note, complete with wax seal! (The paper around it is slightly wrinkled because I beat it up a bit—as in, ‘folded in half’—to see just how supple it truly was. It’s completely intact.)

…And all these treats despite being flooded with orders. There were at least 46 of us who jumped on the 1670 pile.

If the nature of art is that it moves the audience, and the nature of being moved is a connection to emotions that are inherently personal, then unanimous critical praise doesn’t make sense.

If the nature of art is simply that it pleases and entertains, and if the nature of being pleased and entertained is the collision of a piece with your individual sensibilities, then unanimous critical praise doesn’t make sense.

tl;dr: Expecting unanimous critical praise is foolishness. Attaining it is impossible—and should be.

Revolutionary Girl Utena is getting a re-release from the remastered Japanese DVDs! Oh man, I have collected (or tried to collect) this series in so many different forms now.

VHS official releases of 1-13 (mixed dub/sub)
VHS fansubs of 14-39 + the movie
DVD official release of the movie
DVD official boxsets of 1-26 (which included the movie again)

…And now I’m going to buy Nozomi’s sets. Because not only do the remasters beat the tar out of the old VHS transfers, I won’t have to pay $300 for the last thirteen episodes. FFFFF MADNESS.

Never Trust a Programmer:

Programming is a bit of mystery to people. It breeds a lot of distrust in an organization. In general, when you don’t understand what it takes to make something, anything seems plausible.

Worth a read. Though—as always—none of the people who should read it ever will.
