  Pencils.com did a “buy a sketchbook, get four Blackwings free” deal, so I jumped. As expected, these are really nice pencils…smooth and dark, much like the regular Palominos I already had.
  I’m becoming a California Republic fan.

  • I was expecting soft, smooth vinyl erasers, which these aren’t. Granted, they’re nothing like the horrible dried-out paper-eating Pink Pearls of yesteryear, but I’m not sure I’d use them on watercolor paper.
  • I prefer the design of the regular Blackwing to the 602. The metallic finish doesn’t do anything for me, and makes the eraser color seem a little odd. It also lacks the classy ring near the ferrule.
  • Haven’t given the sketchbook enough of a spin to form a real opinion on it, but the sheets are 160 gsm which is nice. I hope more abstract cover variants are in the works.

  I debated with myself about scanning this, but then figured maybe someone else also continually makes this same dumb mistake (not drawing enough chest/placing breasts too high) and then can’t figure out why the arms don’t go on right. WELL, HERE IS A REASON. Probably not the only reason.

  WELP. The NaNoWriMo Book In You journal and a small set of YWP pencils arrived today, so I’m gonna blab about stuff like last year.

  • Covers are very rigid! Even more so than last year. I was shocked.
  • Ruling has been reduced to 6mm!
  • Fountain pen users beware: It’s far less friendly than expected, and actually a big downgrade from last year. Show-through that makes the back of the page unusable, plenty of blood dots, and significant feathering. (Ever seen the ink run off in little hairline strands away from the letters? Yeah, this notebook does that.) Glad I hadn’t planned on using my pens in it.
  • Paper’s very smooth, with rounded edges. Feels nice. Obviously it’s quite off-white this year, but to be more precise the color is a little lighter and yellower than a Moleskine notebook.
  • The new feature not mentioned in the product blurb: a page in the front where you can write your name and address. Nice touch.
  • The manufacturer’s name is impressed into the back of the notebook—”Castelli”. This is the exact notebook the OLL had customized. Just some extra information for funsies ❤

  The pencils are…standard scholastic-grade pencils. I should have known better than to expect something more upscale, since they were made for the Young Writer’s Program. And I ain’t mad that they’re not Blackwings or Hi-Unis or Mono 100s or whatever…but it’s unfortunate that they’re not on par with my Ippos. I mean, the lead broke twice when I first started sharpening one.

  …But hey, there’s a novel inside! I’ll never buy them again, but it’ll be fun to see how many I can go through before December.

  Overall I’m pleased. Now to figure out how to outline…

  I was an omnipresent observer, watching this party of five travel far and wide. Eventually they reached this desert. And while they were originally just passing through, when they stumbled upon that shrine they decided releasing the small god inside was an important part of completing their mission.

  It was about as good an idea as the dark clouds would imply. It’s not that he was evil and decided to antagonize them with his powers—on the contrary, he was the kindest person in the group.

  But releasing his seal brought grave misfortune upon the rest of the world.

  The challenge was to recreate a place from your dreams. lol @ those “clouds”

  This is what happens when you find out an OAV you watched from the mid-nineties was remade into a full series! I also couldn’t help but notice how Strong Female Character her outfit was, but at least anime doesn’t try to make any excuses for itself.
