Chrome automatically installs an updater that runs whenever your computer is idle. Removing Chrome will not remove Google Update, even if you no longer have any software from Google installed on your PC.
Uninstall Chrome.
GoogleUpdate.exe is located in <drive>:\Documents and Settings<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Update. You will probably need to kill the process...
